How to Read Books to Babies

"Readers are made in the laps of parents" I'm a strong believer of this quote. Many new mommies/daddies like us want to introduce books to their babies when those little ones are really little. Some parents I know, often complain that their babies do not show any interest in books. Momsters believe, it is easier with toddlers, who tend to explore anything including books kept in front of them, but when it comes to babies parents need to put in that extra effort.

Exposing babies to books is a great thing to do, as research suggests “children who have heard a lot of stories being read to them before they start preschool, are more exposed to letters and learn reading and writing easily in school." Momsters believe the earlier we begin the better it would be. If you are anything like me then you will start reading the moment you and your baby settle down... To tell you the truth, I used to feel weird reading a book to a non-responsive infant. Now, when I see Zoe absolutely love her books and telling me stories, I know it was all worth the effort.

By the time Zoe was 7 months, she fell in love with her books

So Much More than the ABCs: The Early Phases of Reading and Writing is a popular early literacy guide, which suggests:
  1. Choose board books, but make sure they aren’t very big and heavy. Choose brightly colored picture books with hardly any text.
  2. Let the baby hold the book, let the baby chew it and play with it. This helps the child become familiar with books and soon will start treating them as their own
  3.  If your child wanders off while you’re telling a story, don’t worry… you should continue reading. Chances are the baby will be right back. Children below 18 months are able to enjoy books only for a few minutes.
  4. Try to start an animated conversation, first the child will not respond, and then they will start crying. They will soon start replying in their gibberish, and before you know it they will start completing your sentences. Start by showing a picture (say of a dog) and say “Wow… what is this?” and then you tell them “It is a Dog… D-O-G, Dog says Woof-Woof”
