15 Bollywood Movies you must watch with your kids

Disclaimer - I have kept animation and mythologies out of the list.

When we posted the 15 Hollywood Classics (and some not so old) you can watch with your kids, we received lots and lots of requests for a similar list of Hindi movies. Here are some of my favorites:

Taare Zameen Par (1997)

Can't think of a more appropriate movie to start the list with. This movie shows the journey of 8 year old boy Ishaan Awasthi whose struggling with dyslexia until his new art teacher - Ram Shankar Nikumbh enters his life. The movie deals with a sensitive issue beautifully and every child will relate to it instantly. This definitely is one of the most heart touching movies, don't miss it.

Masoom (1983)

I was in two minds whether I should write Masoom, because it does deal with an issue many kids (especially the younger ones) won't understand. Then I went back to my childhood and I realized, this was one of the 1st movies I loved watching. Actually I don't remember when I saw it first but I always have loved Masoom. Indu and DK are a happily married couple with two daughters — Pinky and Minni. Things change when a little boy Rahul enters their laugh. 'Ladki ki kathi' was the reason enough to include it in the list.

Parichay (1972)

This one is Bollywood's 'Sound of Music' and I fell in love with the movie the moment I first saw the movie.

Mr. India (1987)

Lots of kids, an invisible man, Mogambo and Mogambo's den what else can a kid ask for.

Anjali (1990)

Anjali is Mani Ratnam's Taare Zameen Par... This movie beautifully shows a cute little 2 year old Anjali who is mentally challenged. Her dad hides her from her mother by telling her Anjali was born dead. The mother - daughter finally meet, and how they finally come together.

Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke (1993)

If you are looking to laugh with your kids, this movie promises some neat clean fun. A movie where Rahul (Aamir Khan) takes care of his neice & nephews after the death of the kid's parents. The kids are brats to put it politely and they dislike their uncle. How their new nanny Vyjayanthi (Juhi Chawla) makes Rahul come close to the kids.

Halo (1996)

Your kids (especially the ones who love dogs) will love Halo. 7 year old mother-less child Sasha's story to find her lost puppy (Halo) back. I saw this long back on DD and instantly fell in love with the movie (though I'm not a dog person myself).

Madkee (2002)

My list would not have been complete without Madkee. Vishal Bhardwaj's story about twins Chunni Munni who were as different as chalk and cheese. Chunni messes up with the village witch and Munni lands in trouble. The witch converts Munni into a hen. Shabana Azmi plays the witch perfectly... the movie get some brownie points for "O Papad wale Panga na le"

Stanley Ka Dabba (2011)

Stanley a grade 4 kid is the star amongst his friends. His English Teacher (Divya Dutta) is especially impressed by Stanley's beautiful poetry. However not everone appreciates him, as everyone does'nt understand his imagination. His 'Khadoos' Hindi Teacher (Amol Gupte) does not bring his own dabba but lusts after everyone else's. Even Stanley doesn't get food but all his friends willingly share food with him.

Iqbal (2005)

A movie about a cricket-obsessed deaf and mute young boy called Iqbal who hails from a small village. He aims to overcome his difficulties and becomes a cricketer. His dream comes true when he gets selected in the Indian Cricket team.

Koi Mil Gaya (2003)

'Jaadu Jaadu Jaadu Jaadu' one of the biggest reason why you should watch this with your kids.

Bumm Bumm Bole (2010)

Another beautiful movie staring Darsheel Safari. A story of two siblings and the shoes they lost.

The Blue Umbrella (2012)

This is based on Ruskin Bond's novel, The Blue Umbrella. It is about a  girl Biniya who has a blue umbrella and the whole village has their eyes on it.

Bhootnath (2008)

It is about an adorable ghost 'Bhootnath' played by Big B and an equally adorable little boy Banku.

Haathi Mere Saathi (1971)

This film narrates the story of friendship between Raju an orphan and his elephant.

Other movies you can watch are: Jajantaram Mamantaram, Raju Chacha, Brahmachari, Chhota Chetan, Safed Haathi, Kitaab, Zokkomon, Chak De, Rani Aur Laal Pari
