Who is Bindiya Joseph?
The name is Joseph, Bindiya Joseph. I’m not as cool as Bond (I suspect it’s because of the not-so-funny jokes) but I do a lot of things well, and I believe in reporting back properly to a higher boss. I have a small family of 3. My husband Arjun is a product designer and my daughter Sia, who in her own words is 3 ½ kilometers old. Sia means bringer of joy in Persian and she doesn’t have to try hard to give her doting parents just that.
Momsters (M): Before you became a mom... (Before you became a mom, what were you involved in?)
Bindiya (B): I want to begin this with a ‘once upon a time…’, because it seems like another life, this time where I wasn’t a mom. Anyway, before I was a mom, I was into HR dreaming of making it big in the strategizing and management world
M: Can you tell us more about your business? What is it about?
M: Can you tell us more about your business? What is it about?
B: I run Club Lollipop, which is an after school home based club for kids. I conduct storytelling classes for the 2-4 (enhancing the effect of fairytales through doing book related puppet shows, art and cooking) and the 3-7 age groups (by taking a country, a story from that place, and enhancing knowledge by playing games from that country, making art and cooking food from that country). I also conduct classes on yoga, geography, games etc for these age groups.
M: How long have you been in business?
B: A year now

M: How did you come up with this idea?
B: The idea started when my child was getting a blood test done. She was petrified of the needles and so to distract her, I started telling her a story, and slowly her limbs relaxed and she got so caught up in the tale, that she didn’t even realize the big needle going in and the 6 vials we filled up in the interim. I realized the sheer power of a great story that day and decided to start a club for kids where things were taught with the story as a base for each.

M: What inspired you to start a venture of your own?
B: My child and my husband who was never interested in stories before he heard his wife’s take on them, and who has been a rock steady pillar of support (and also the business’s design head)

M: What made you decide to start this kind of business?
B: I wanted to be a hands on mom, and starting a venture of my own meant I could choose my timings, and choosing a venture like this meant I could take my daughter along for the ride.

M: Were there any obstacles you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a mompreneur? What are these?
B: There are certain time issues. You need to be the best you can be at all times to everyone in your personal and professional work sphere, just like every other working woman, and that’s hard on some days. While doing a class with your own little one in it, is also a challenge as they are not in a great mood one day, or terribly possessive in the next.
M: What do you love best about your job?
B: The fact I can see instant joy and love and excitement and their little wheels turning in their heads as they grasp what I am trying to teach them as I go through my class. At the end of the day, I also get a wild hug and kiss from my child who tells me I’m the best and ‘funnest’ mom.
M: According to you, what are key traits a mompreneur should have when starting their own business?
B: All the traits that go into being a good mom like lots of patience, determination, love for the business plus a clear focus on what your product/service/ target market is and a sense of finance
M: Is entrepreneurship for every mom?
B: If you have enough patience and self confidence, it is. Every talent you have is something another may not be talented in, or wants to learn from you. My completely useless talent for rhyming things is a major pull in a story class for children, so don’t discount your talents, but hone them well for the career of your choice.
M: Is the professional personal? Do you find that you sometimes need to create boundaries between home life and work life?
B: Yes, sometimes the lines do blur. But if you’re clear with your clients and your own family from the beginning, then these occasions are rare and few
