My Book Corner

Guest Post By: Padmini A Bailur

I always seem to have a writer's block when it comes to writing an article. It takes me a lot of time to pen down my thoughts, when others are involved in the reading.

Books, books, books..... My hubby, dotty and I love reading. I don't know whether reading is inculcated or inborn but we make it a point that we read to our kid everyday. My dotty all of 20 months has her own choices of books.

It's so difficult to chose 1 book out of so many of our favorites. So I plan to take an author and cover the books written by him and that we have read.

I would start off with Dr. Seuss. We own a lot of his books. Initially when you read it to a younger group as old as say 8, 9 or 10 month old baby it will comes across to you that the baby is not interested in these books. But believe me these books help u in increasing the vocabulary n word pronunciation of the kid.Slowly the child picks up words n can associate to the situation. Few of his books are:

  • Green eggs and ham
  • Horton hatches the egg
  • One fish, two fish, red fish, blue fish
  • Mr Brown can moo can you?
  • Hop on pop
  • Fox in socks
  • Dr. Seuss's ABC
  • I'm not going to get up today
  • The cat in the hat
  • Horton hears a who

Basically it is easier for the child to pick up words because they are repetitive, rhyming, easy words (3,4,5 letter words), follows a pattern of fewer units in each line.

Another author PD Eastman has a similar styling of work. His most famous works
  • Are you my mother?
  • Sam and the firefly
Pick them up and read them to your kid. Use a lot of animation as all of these books call for that :):):)

Happy reading & giggles :)
