We love road trips, they have their own charm (if you aren't motion sick that is). With kids, road trips take a different meaning all together. Going on a long road trip with kids is definitely not easy, and if you have not prepared yourself enough... God Bless You.
Road trips can be smooth if you are prepared and believe me, you will enjoy more with your little ones. I have already taken 3 road trips with my 2 year old, and they have been amazing.
You have to remember, you are not just traveling on your own, or as a couple. Be a little more responsible and plan the road trip well in advance (at least a week before the trip). If you have a small car and 2 children, road trips are a big no-no. You can rent a bigger car for the trip else cancel your plan of traveling by road. You do not want to squeeze in the car, which will result in body ache on the very first day of your holiday.
When you pack things you will use during your journey, make sure you pack intelligently. Keep in mind the child needs to be entertained, well fed, safe and clean. If you are traveling towards a colder area carry an extra jacket.
If you have a young child, make sure you have a car seat in place. This will ensure your child is safely bundled up throughout the journey. You need to carry lots of water, and keep a small first aid kit in the car.
If you are planning to hit the road early in the morning, make sure your baby and you get a good night sleep. If not early morning, Momsters believe a good time to leave is a little before lunch, feed the child in the car and they will go off to sleep in no time. Make sure you do not over feed them, and try to give them something they like. While your child is sleeping make sure you avoid stopping the car, it will sure wake them up. Some parents I know, travel during night, they dress their child in P.Js, tuck them in the car seat, as the kid will then sleep in no time throughout the journey. I'm not too convinced because the parents will be too tired and sleep deprived after the trip. Also if your child does not go off to sleep, you will end up dealing with a cranky child howling throughout the journey.
