I am born to be a mother! Children form a very integral part of my life. I have always enjoyed spending time with them and instantaneously take up the mothering role – be it my daughter, younger cousins, friends children, children of domestic helps or anonymous kids I meet on my way. I suppose my ability to dream and live in a make-believe world makes children’s company so appealing. After mothering teaching is my next passion...you can say all mothers are natural teachers, in my case it is a bit more pronounced.
Momsters (M) - Before you became a mom... (Before you became a mom, what were you involved in?)
Oindrila (O) - Professionally I am a trained communicator and have spent over thirteen years in public relations and marketing communication roles. I have also been teaching communication at various institutes. It was the love of my daughter that compelled me to quit corporate life and adopt the complex role of a ‘full-time hands-on-mom’.
M - Can you tell us more about your business? What is it about?

O - Grooming Babies is a belief. We believe it is every child’s right to be emotionally healthy; and as a parent we are solely responsible for it.
The team comprise of parents, who have made child upbringing their priority, and aspire to facilitate other parents in their parenting journey. Together we assist in understanding the emotional needs of children, educate parents about the science of parenting, empower them with tools to master the art of child communication, and create platforms to facilitate emotional growth. Parenting workshops, events for dad and child, mommy meets, messy play-dates and cultural shows form a part of our bouquet.
The essence of our work is to complement the physical and academic growth of children with stimulants that will nourish a child’s unique emotional intellect.
M - How long have you been in business?

M - How did you come up with this idea?
O - Motherhood!! I wanted to make my daughter emotionally secure and form a bond that will set a healthy relationship base for grown-up years… just did not know how. So I took to reading and research. Over a period I started sharing all the information with my friends, and realized most needed a platform that will help them implement the information. That is when Grooming Babies got conceptualized.
M - What inspired you to start a venture of your own?
O - Our corporate set-up is not equipped to employee new mothers and I was not ready to compromise on my daughter’s time. In fact I had always wanted to start something of my own; mom-hood gave me the push.
M - What made you decide to start this kind of business?
O - Lack of availability! I was scouting for activities where my daughter and I could engage meaningfully. A set-up that will not dictate structure to my baby, but will let her set the flow. There are very few such options available where a parent and child could do things together, especially after 2 years.
M - Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a mompreneur? What are these?

M - Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a mompreneur? What are these?
O - Several! First being time. It’s tough to work when your baby sleeps and play when she is awake. Also people's mindset. Ones you are a mother society thinks you now need to ‘settle down’ as ‘career thinking women’ can never do justice to motherhood. They somehow think what you do is more like a ‘hobby’ and not a serious ‘business proposition’. Also most believe you need a lot of money to run a business, a myth I had to break.
M - What do you love best about your job?
Oindrila in Action |
O - That I get to dream without limits; that there is no concept of ‘Glass Ceiling’ existing anymore; that I get to work at my pace with the people I like and on a concept so close to my heart; that I get to see children laughing with delight and feel important that it is some of my actions that have ignited this reaction.
M - According to you, what are key traits a mompreneur should have when starting their own business?
O - Ability to Dream and Believe in self!!
M - Is entrepreneurship for every mom?
O - Every mom is an entrepreneur in their own right…it’s not less than a CEO’s job to lead a home and build a child’s future. Yes some may not prefer to employee their skills for generating revenue and, I think it is OK. One should not force themselves…having said that one should not curtail themselves either. Anyone can do it, provided they want to do it.
M - Is the professional personal? Do you find that you sometimes need to create boundaries between home life and work life?
O - I have not managed to do so yet! Both are ‘me’ so really don’t know how to separate.
M - Anything you want to offer to Momsters' readers
