The harsh Indian summer is here & most part of the country gets engulfed in terrible heat. Along with many other concerns, parents of little ones are also worried about how to take care of their child… how to keep them cool as well as safe from the scorching sun.
Here are a few tips that Momsters suggests to keep your little one cool & comfortable during these hot months.
COTTONS.. COTTONS.. COTTONS Dress your child in breathable, loose-fitted cottons that keep the skin dry & cool. Synthetic fabrics end up giving rashes & leave the skin hot & sweaty.
When indoors you can leave your baby in light-weight T-shirts, summery dresses & shorts. Sleeveless t-shirts are also a good way to beat the heat. However when venturing outdoors, keep your child covered to avoid skin-damage from the sun.
Talking about skin-damage, slather lots of sunscreen on your kids when outdoors. Ensure the sunscreen is:
- Chemical Free
- Protects against both UV-A and UV-B rays
- Sun Protection Factor or SPF 15-30 (protects from UV-B rays)
- At least 4 stars for UV-A protection
- Water Resistant
- Check on expiry date
- Apply at least 15-20 minutes before stepping in the sun.
- Re-apply every 2 hours
Use protective head gear like wide-brimmed hats or caps to keep your child protected from direct sun. While choosing a hat or cap make sure it is not tight for the child & leaves enough room for your child’s head & hair to breathe.
If you are a strong believer in massaging your baby, give it a skip during summers. Thick & oily body lotions, creams & oils should be avoided in the heat as they end up causing rashes.
Parents with infants or toddlers may want to look for lighter & breathable nappies & diapers. Cotton nappies might be a difficult deal but keep the baby cool & comfortable.
Keep those little feet in airy sandals & if you must put them in socks, ensure they are 100% cotton.
Last but not the least, your little one’s eyes need as much protection from the sun & heat as yours. Buy them good quality sun-glasses with UV protection to reduce the glare.
Here’s wishing you & your tot a safe & comfortable summer with lots of fun.
