Who is Anne Rakesh?
I am Anne Rakesh, originally from Kerala but currently based out of Bangalore. I and Rakesh have been enjoying conjugal bliss for the last four years and two years ago, that love strengthened a few notches with the birth of Megan, our daughter and our inspiration all the same.
Anne (A): I was a trainer of Medical Transcription before HappyKnots evolved.
M: Can you tell us more about your business? What is it about?
A: HappyKnots is a family dream project where we hand craft accessories for toddlers to teens to women. We offer a rather large platter of handmade accessories like hair clips, crochet earrings, anklets, charm accessories, stoles , hats and beanies for both men and women , dreamcatchers and recently we have forayed into home and venue décor. The products are a work of hands and so each item I make has a part of me in it. And the tedious process feels like cake walk when I see the Cheshire cat like grin spread across my customers face.

M: How long have you been in business?
A: HappyKnots will soon be celebrating its second year anniversary only looking ahead with unmistakable vision and the prowess to grow past its own limitations.

M: How did you come up with this idea?
A: The idea was nothing more than a joyous way to kill time along with crocheting goodies for our daughter, Megan. At the time, I had no intention to build this into a commercial venture, but clearly, destiny had different things for us, and thus. While giving life to a tedious yet joyous hobby, we traveled miles into several things of varied sizes and shapes and finally got trapped under one Crocheted Umbrella, HappyKnots!

M: What inspired you to start a venture of your own?
A: In one word, Megan, our daughter and lucky mascot. I owe HappyKnots to her, she’s the reason I started crocheting, and once we did, we never had the time or inclination to look back. However, none of this would have seen day light if not for the immense love, companionship and support of my husband Rakesh, who is also my business associate.

M: What made you decide to start this kind of business?
A: Once I realized I loved what I was doing, the decision to make this a way of livelihood was rather effortless. There was craftsmanship; there was passion, an eye for detail and the will to spend sleepless nights creating things. And tossing all those ingredients together is the legendary recipe for a runaway success story!

M: Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a mompreneur? What are these?
A: Crochet in itself is less a hobby and more a challenge owing to its intricate disposition. Besides that, I am not from a business background, so the challenges were mammoth. Everything had to be done from scratch, and HappyKnots being an unplanned venture, we simply wore our heart on our sleeves and went with our instincts. Growing customer base and demand for an assortment of products drove us through rugged paths, but their support got us coming out looking victorious as we met each demand with intense care.

M: What do you love best about your job?
A: The fact that I love doing what I am doing steals the show. Such few people are fortunate enough to be able to pursue a career that holds within itself the one thing they are passionate about. HappyKnots is an extension of my family, our daughter Megan inspires, my husband Rakesh steers me and I create. It thus becomes less of a job and more of an entertaining, yet slightly exhausting way to spend time with your family.

M: According to you, what are key traits a mompreneur should have when starting their own business?
A: Focus, passion and the will to push yourself beyond your comfort zone to explore new realms is all it takes, besides ample hard work, obviously. And in our case, we realized, it never really is too late to find your passion.

M: Is entrepreneurship for every mom?
A: Like I said, if you have the passion and the sturdy support of your family, yes, entrepreneurship can be tucked into any woman’s sleeve. It’s not well paved road, it’s a rugged off road trip where you stretch every living inch of yours out of proportion, but you come out feeling priceless.

M: Is the professional personal? Do you find that you sometimes need to create boundaries between home life and work life?
A: The rule is, and always will be, family first. It is a constant scuffle between work and family, but the key is to draw the right balance, and I know I’ve struck the balance when I’ve managed to put a smile on a satisfied customer while ensuring my family stays deliriously happy about that very same smile!
