Momsters Celebrate Mompreneurs - Priya Sachan (Shishu World)

Momsters (M): Who is Priya Sachan?
Priya (P): I am Priya Sachan, a software engineer, a wife and above all a mum to a 2 and half years old angel. I love cooking, reading and doing crafts as well. I stay in Bangalore with my husband and daughter and feel blessed to have the most supporting partner and family.

M: Before you became a mom... (Before you became a mom, what were you involved in?)
P:
Before I was a mom, I was full-time software professional with a reputed IT company. I had worked in the industry for over a decade in various capacities.
M: Can you tell us more about your business? What is it about?
P: I run a parenting website called Shishuworld.  It is an informational website which provides parenting tips, pregnancy advice, baby and toddler care tips, recipes and craft ideas. Our magic box is choc-a-bloc with fun things for kids like rhymes, original stories, picture books, videos and so on. We also have exclusive applications and games for parents and kids.

We aim to become a one-stop place for all the parenting info for Indian parents in India and abroad.

M: How long have you been in business?
P: ShishuWorld is now 1 year and 10 months old. It is my second baby and it was launched on my daughter’s first birthday.
M: How did you come up with this idea?
P:
I stay in Bangalore and had no one to help me while I was carrying Aanya. Our parents and in- laws have their own commitments and their age also does not always permit them to leave everything and be with you for the long duration that you need help. In such a situation, you naturally lean towards internet which can help you connect with other mums who are in the same boat. I increasingly felt that the information was more from western point of view which though helpful was not always something that one could relate to. So, that was the seed for ShishuWorld, a place for Indian mums and dads.

M: What inspired you to start a venture of your own?
P: It was the confusion that ensued after the birth of my daughter. I wanted to be with her at all times. Leaving her in the care of a complete stranger was not an option for me. At the same time, having worked for so long I knew I will not be able to just stay at home and it might also lead to frustration in the long run. The idea of starting the site had already taken place, but making it a full-time venture meant that much more commitment and effort went into it.

M: What made you decide to start this kind of business?
P:
The inspiration is my daughter. I strive to be the best parent to her as does every mom and we are just trying to help them in every way.

M: Were there any obstacles that you faced when you decided to pursue becoming a mompreneur? What are these?
P:
I had complete support from my husband and family, so no one questioned me why I wanted to quit. However, it is still not easy to explain to people why I would want to spend so much time and energy on helping others. There is a lot of ignorance in our society when it comes to internet and businesses.

M: What do you love best about your job?
P:
It lets me do what I want to. I decide the course of action and there is no one else to answer to. It is my baby and all its successes and failures are my own.

M: According to you, what are key traits a mompreneur should have when starting their own business?
P:
First and the most important there should be a clear idea and vision of what you want to do. You should not try and do something because someone else is doing it. Do your homework. It is important to find out all you can before taking the plunge. I spent 6 months preparing the content and designing the site before I launched it. You will still be learning on the job, but will be better placed.  There will be good days and bad. Do not get bogged down by few failures. Nothing comes without a little hardship.

M: Is entrepreneurship for every mom?
P:
Absolutely. I believe that every woman is talented in some way and one can start a venture if one is passionate and enthusiastic. But it is not easy and one needs to be ready for loads for sweat and pain in the process.

M: Is the professional personal? Do you find that you sometimes need to create boundaries between home life and work life?
P:
It does happen especially during the initial days when you are eating, drinking, sleeping your venture. I do not face this problem because my husband is also a partner and he helps me with tech stuff, so we discuss whatever it is that is bothering me. He also is a hands-on dad who happily takes care of our daughter if I am super-busy. But yes, I have learnt to put things on back burner and prioritize personal and professional.

M: Anything you want to offer to Momsters' readers (this one is optional, we added this section because one of our mompreneurs wanted this)
P:
We are currently working on a software solution for moms like nothing available at the moment. It is still getting developed and we will soon share with all moms and specially Momsters’ readers once it is launched. It is an extension of our vision to make parents’ lives simpler.
